Paying for Bathrooms - September 2, 2011
On hot days, where you drink lots of water and walk lots, it came as a shock that a weak bladder combined with litres upon litres of liquid, that paying 1 euro to pee was just to much.
See Derrick this 2011/2012 season pondering the various facets of travel with a credit card.
Planes, trains and automobiles - August 28, 2011
The bus can be my hotel, the road my friend, and the local gas stations and bus stops along the way my breaks form the rock and rattling of the bus.
I can't understand why you get seat belts for a plane that compared to a bus or train you barely has movements. Have you ever tried to take a Pee in a coach bus while it is moving (that is a comedy show in itself).
Minimal security on a bus, no seat belts, you are allowed nail clippers, you can get off on long rides, you don't pay extra for little pretzels and it is rush seating. The perfect life....not!

Meet Derrick Mueller-BREAKING THE MOLD - February 19, 2011
Meet Derrick Mueller-BREAKING THE MOLD Adapted from Michele Aubie's article
(Originally published in Tru-life Magazine-Adapted)
Have you ever had the fortune of meeting an extraordinary person, someone who can simplify the seemingly complicated with a discerning and insightful outlook on life? I have, and I’d like to introduce you to him. Meet Derrick Mueller, he is an author, an ordained minister, a teacher, an actor, an artist, a communications specialist, a leadership consultant, a CEO, an entrepreneur, a husband and a father. (Imagine squeezing all that onto one business card!) Most importantly, at the core of these many titles, is his one true designation: creator. Everything he has done has been out of a desire to create and to use his creativity with the purpose of making a positive difference in other people’s lives. He has spent his life creating hope and change for others in ways that are never short of innovative.
In light of Derrick’s many successes, his journey has not been without some scarring and close encounters with death. As a preschooler, Derrick survived a three-story fall. He was given two gifts: the gift of life and the gift of an innovative mind, or what doctors call slight brain damage. As a result, he has an out-of-the-box way of thinking that has been the source of new life and hope for the people he has worked with.
Along with his mind, Derrick is also unique in his perseverance and ability to overcome great difficulties, like his painful childhood. In his early teenage years, Derrick had another close brush with death when he made a near attempt on his own life. The weight he bore from an alcoholic mother, an abusive step father, the subsequent abuse he faced in foster homes as well as by some of his high school peers, became too much to bear and he wanted a way out. But before death sunk its cold grip into him, he found God and fully surrendered to his love and he chose to set forth a new direction in his life of helping others.
Derrick spent a large part of his early years working for the church as a minister, then as an executive director for a non-profit youth ministry, then he taught at a college in Saskatoon and held many seminars and spoken at hundreds of group meetings and crowds over 2,000 as a motivational speaker. Throughout these professions, Derrick began to realize that his message reached more people by using his humourous and storytelling approach instead of traditional church-like tactics. Being a self-proclaimed out-of-the-box thinker and embracing this approach, he started writing short humourous articles on his own life experiences that were published in a local newspaper. He became known as the unorthodox pastor and those people outside of whom he would normally reach in his profession came to admire these stories.
As Derrick went on to publish the stories into one book, he discovered another innovative art form he could utilize to deliver his message. When I Look Back I Laugh became a published book as well as a unique and ever-evolving one-man comedy show, written and performed by none other than the unorthodox pastor himself. Derrick describes the play as a personal story of overcoming, told through chronological tales of life’s journey. “I’m a creator and I’m okay with that. I like who I am and I’m not going to conform to anybody else’s image.” He continues to put on the play and donates the proceeds to different charities.
Derrick’s combined strengths in communications, leadership, and innovative thinking have made him a valuable guide for organizations facing various setbacks, be it financial, direction, vision, hope, team trouble, planning, etc. He is currently focusing his profession on leadership consulting. His expertise is often sought when people have exhausted their own survival strategies and need a new direction Through his many leadership consultations, he has helped a number of organizations including churches, non-profit groups, international businesses and the Emmanuel Bible College in Kitchener get back on track. He has written two books on his leadership and training prowess called The Amaryllis Way – Growing People Who Grow People and more recently, Growing Teams – The Amaryllis Way – Personal Assessment and Team Profiling Tool. Each book teaches leadership and teamwork through mentoring and nurturing processes, to better understand people’s individual strengths in order to achieve greater results as a whole.
What Derrick can’t communicate in words, in teaching, in acting, in writing, he can communicate in painting.
Derrick and his son Caleb opened an art gallery as a one year project in St. Jacobs called Thisway Gallery in 2009. “My crusade is I want to help people survive their marriages, survive their parents, survive their jobs, and sometimes if I can use humour to do it I will, if it’s teaching I will, if it’s painting I will.” For Derrick, painting is not only therapeutic it is another way of communicating hope. “Art allows people to express what’s in their heart and inner soul.” He asserts that whether you are the painter or the admirer, “if you can help people interpret their own pain, they’re own joy, their own reality, then I feel like you’ve been successful.”
With an endless list of success stories associated with his name, Derrick’s greatest achievement is what remains closest to his heart. “In the end, it’s the relationship with my wife and kids that’s the most important thing.” He makes sure to set aside time each month to spend with his four kids and he continues to date his wife of twenty-eight years who, he proclaims with a smile, “I’m still madly in love with.”
Derrick’s mission to create hope and positive change in other people’s lives remains steadfast; “I want to give honour to the people who made a difference in my life by making a difference in other people’s lives.”
